So, basically...

Currently a 3rd year BDes Animation student at DJCAD, just starting to widen my horizons and dabble in 3D and special effects. This blog is really just full of random pictures from my work and equally random ramblings about everything and anything.

Week 5

Blog, I've been abandoning you. You know, people grow apart. I am here to ask for your forgiveness. CHEERS.

Right, so it's week 5 and a lot has gone on since I last wrote here.

Dr Wen has been scripted and storyboarded a million times. Well, actually about 6. It feels like a million though, because I'm writing the scripts. Worse for Robbie though, cause he's doing the storyboards, so I shouldn't moan.

It's a bit stressful really to still be messing with the storyboards at this stage, but the basic shape of the idea is staying the same, so it's not really a hindrance to the other things going on. Just ironing little things out.

Anyways, tonight I started modelling Dr Wen. And I hate Dr Wen, I hate Maya, and I hate everything associated with both of them.

I just keep telling myself "This is your first time modelling, you will get better."
Here's hoping.

This is what I have accomplished tonight. Tomorrow, it will become a masterpiece.

Back to uni!

A week and a half ago, this post would have been appropriate. Sorry blog, I've been a busy bee! Let me catch you up.

I scrapped my summer idea about 4 days before the deadline, because frankly it was boring. Doing so worked in my favour though, because it was then that I was blessed with the idea that became 'Dr Wen's Halloween Costume', the film that me and my happy group of helpers are now working on. Huzzah!

Every time I try to describe the plot it sounds worse, and I'm always cautious about putting short film ideas on the internet. We have to make a blog this semester anyway, so you can read all about it there.

Just know that it involves a crazy doctor in a morgue. And it came from MY BRAIN. So proud of my brain at this point.

So yeah, the original idea was that it was going to be in 2d, but after some serious deliberation we've chosen to dive right in to 3d. I've been contemplating learning some 3d skills for a while now, so here it goes. Off to the library to find "3D animation for idiots", or something similar...

Tuesday 2 August 2011

So I've had an idea!

Not gonna post the plot cause it's not final, and I don't want folk pinching etc.

Gonnae get to drawing little boys now.

Tuesday 12 July 2011

So, my holidays are yet to prove useful.

I did get a job, though. Which is productive in a sense, but really killing my desire to draw.

I need to get inspired. Some of the people who come into my work do really make me want to draw, but then another will come in who makes me want to kill myself, and that tends to take over.

On a positive note, I have recently discovered Chowder. It is the funniest cartoon I have ever watched.

Tuesday 17 May 2011

Okay, so it's officially summer

And the job hunt has begun, so hopefully soon I will be way too employed to do much art.

Job or not, however, I have decided I'm going to actually learn how to do things digitally this summer, so hopefully I won't be abandoning this blog for months at a time again. Posts will be shite like, but at least they'll exist.

And on that note, I'm off.

Wednesday 20 April 2011

Jesus, it's been a while.

Hey blog! What do you mean? It's me! Naw? Oh come on, I was busy. I won't do it again. I'm sorry blog, you now have my undivided attention.

What even was the last thing I posted? Oh wow. Okay, here goes.

So, since then it's been like... 3 months. A whole semester, almost. So yeah, after designing the chef (now affectionately, and often resentfully) known as Chuck, the class voted Jamie's design as the best one, and we all got to work learning how to draw him. Not an easy task, but with Jamie constantly cracking the whip (metaphorically, of course) we all soon got to grips with it. Well, basically.

So after a while of practicing mad poses and the like, we got working on the plot of the 40 second piece we were going to animate. The plot changed about a million times, but we settled on one eventually. This was actually well after we'd storyboarded a few times, pretty frustrating like.

So yeah, once all was sorted, we got to doing 10 seconds worth of keyframing each. Once that was done, we swapped about and started inbetweening. New discovery? I hate inbetweening more than charting and dopesheets combined. Traditional animation keeps slipping down the list of ways I want to work, but you still can't beat how it looks.

I'll stick up a few line tests within the next couple of days ( I promise!) I just need to buy a new memory stick first. No idea where mines has gone.

Semester 2, off with a bang.

So for the last week, I've been designing Ben's design of a builder/chef guy for our group project. Thought I'd chuck a bunch of drawings on here.

SEMESTER 2

Sorry I've been ignoring you, blog. I've been run off my heels with the start of semester 2.

Let me sum it up for you quickly. Over the holidays we had to think of a character description, without producing any drawings. When we came back, we picked the 6 best from the class, and now we're working in groups of 4, designing the look of the characters, and producing a 40s long story that involves a change of clothes and a switch of emotion. The character my group are working on is a builder/chef guy, courtesy of Ben.

To sum him up, he's a big guy (reminiscent of mr incredible, bluto, desperate dan) who works as a builder. When he comes home at night, he turns into a chef, who cooks up beautiful food using his tools.

So for the past few days we've been messing with the plot and doodling away. Final model sheets have to be done for Thursday, I'll stick them up when I finish them.
